Distributed technologies are systems of technology without centralized coordination or control, operating through networks that aggregate and coordinate elements in a distributed fashion. Distributed systems place productive and control capabilities at the point of use, thus enabling production to take place at the edges of the network by many different actors that may be simultaneously producers and consumers. Examples include solar panels, wind turbines, the internet, social networks, blockchain and 3d printing. Although distributed technologies have always been there on the fringes, today a number of factors are working to fundamentally change the centralized model. As connectivity increases, distributed systems are becoming more prevalent.
